Westmeath’s first ever Culture Night was held last week, September 24, and was hailed “a great success” by Westmeath County Council, who were delighted by the turnout and support shown.

Almost 60 years after the first ever fleadh took place in Mullingar, a campaign is gathering steam to bring the event back to the Westmeath town in three years’ time.

With more than 70 free events planned for Westmeath’s first ever Culture Night, the county is set to become a hive of cultural activity with an endless choice of entertainment on offer.

In an effort to showcase the breadth of culture available around Mullingar, the county council will host an extraordinary 50 cultural events for free on Friday, September 24.

An open invitation has been extended to the people of Westmeath to celebrate the county's official launch of Culture Night 2010.

The very first Culture Night to be held in Westmeath promises to have something for everyone with more than 70 different events being held throughout the county.

From traditional to cutting edge artists, there is an opportunity for everyone to get involved when the ‘Mullingart’ event kicks off later this summer.

A new film club in Sonna, an African drumming workshop in Empor, an active age celebration of Bealtaine in Kilbeggan, a Mullingar camera club exhibition, as well as the Festival of Fire at Uishneach and the All-Ireland Drama Festival in Athlone were just some of the “incredible” attractions on offer from the arts in Westmeath for just the month of May, according to Westmeath’s arts officer, Catherine Kelly, at the launch of the county’s second arts plan in the county buildings in Mullingar this week.

At least 165 Westmeath artists have managed to stay and work in the county over the last six years, thanks to the support of the county council, the Arts Officer revealed in her presentation to the chamber this week.

Galway Culture Night takes place on Friday September 25 with a host of free musical, literary, and arts events taking place throughout the city.
